The Bicycles
5/9/6 at Schubas in Chicago
I hadn’t heard of The Bicycles before going to Schubas and I had no idea what to expect but was thrilled when I discovered that not only were they from Toronto (yay Canada!) but had the perfect blend of garage and twee with nice backup harmonies, tambourines and sometimes female vs. male fronted songs vocally. The songs sound great on their album: The Good, the Bad, and the Cuddly with melodies you can tap your feet to and an emotional tone of happiness quite different than some other things I have been listening to quite a bit lately (The Red House Painters: Rollercoaster and Eels: Live with Strings for example, which are both very excellent albums but also quite melancholy)
The Bicycles are just sunnier and brighter in terms of that. Great energy live too! You can hear their songs on their myspace page
