Alan Licht, Rob Mazurek (Mandarin Movie)

5/22/6 Empty Bottle in Chicago
It’s been an odd sort of day. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with all of this free time of having the summer off and I’m doing a few art projects that rely on collage art and all of a sudden, I find myself looking at pictures of Françoise Hardy. There are some good ones of her young and then there was one I found of her older. For some reason, it made me sad. That has nothing to do with Alan Licht or Mandarin Movie of course. It’s just that I figured if I had time to be sad about old pictures of Françoise Hardy, then I had time to catch up on some posting for Mandarin Movie, who I saw so long ago or at least it feels like it.
It was a moody night altogether and I guess most of the time I was thinking Mandarin Movie should do the score if any great director decides to film a remake of Naked Lunch. It is mostly chaotic jazz music-like postmodern free jazz. Both Alan Licht and Rob Mazurek are phenomenally talented and well known musicians in the field but they were accompanied by other very talented instrumentalists as well (which you’ll see if you look at all of the pictures).
You can actually hear songs of theirs on their myspace page My favorite is the calm between the storms: “The Ghost Ship is Sinking.”
