6/23/6 at the Lakeshore Theater in Chicago

I’d like to reaffirm how much I love this venue…The sound is great, the shows are booked by the Empty Bottle, and the lighting is adequate for pictures.

Rogue Wave could unfortunately only play for about an hour due to time constraints and a late arrival of one of the two bands (either them or Chin Up Chin Up) but they managed to really fit in all of their best songs from Out of the Shadow and Descended Like Vultures (their most recent 2005 SubPop release) with a bit more of a leaning towards their more recent stuff. They also played a couple of new songs, including one they said was titled, “Lake Michigan” and they were joined onstage by The Stills in town because of Intonation Music Festival this weekend (which I intend to post pics from) Song highlights included a really nice low key “California” and “Falcon Settles Me” juxtposed with the eccentric poppy “Every Moment,” “Nourishment Nation,” “Publish My Love” and the equally enchanting, “Kicking the Heart Out,” “Love’s Lost Guarantee,” “Bird on a Wire” (that lyric “Geriactric at 20 yrs old” always gets to me.) They also covered the Beatles song, “I’m Only Sleeping” (rather well, I might add and I’m not keen on Beatles covers in general) and ended the set overall with “Eyes.” It was my first experience seeing Rogue Wave live and I felt their songs came off even better than on album for the most part. As idiosyncratic as they are at times, Rogue Wave really has a sunny sort of sound that fits in with the fact that they are from California. It all just feels right.

Hear some of these songs on their Myspace page
