Favourite Sons from Brooklyn is a five piece that has just signed to Vice Records. Others have commented on how Ken Griffin’s vocals sound similar to both Bono and Ian McCulloch of Echo & the Bunnymen but I would add that there is something all of his own in there between the deep slight vibrato and the way the rest of the musical undertones of the drums, guitar, and bass support the vocals that remain a strong focus of the songs throughout. For example, on the song, “Hang on Girl” when Griffin’s voice raises an octave, the riffs of the other instruments become fuller and undeniably catchier for the chorus. On the other song from their myspace page , “Down Beside Your Beauty,” the listener is treated to a couple of moments of only Griffin’s vocals without the accompaniment of the other instruments at all while he sings a sweetly pained, “My sweet lover.” Look for their release on Vice Records in September.
