Charlotte Hug

Charlotte Hug is a Swiss musician who played an early show last night with Chicagoan celloist Fren Longberg-Holm. It was both intense and minimalistic at the same time. Charlotte used all parts of her viola bow to elicit certain sounds and even used her hands in certain ways against the viola to capture sounds bodies might make. Fred ended up playing with the use of all kinds of devices: knives, clothespins, dish scrubbers. It was a way you’re unlikely to have seen these musical instruments being played. The two of them worked well together, capturing a sort of weird instrumental harmony between the unusual sounds. It was an eccentric symphony that worked.
