Apollo Sunshine

7/23/6
Wicker Park Street Festival
Chicago
I have to admit, my favorite thing about Apollo Sunshine is their ability to infuse psychedelica into folk rock numbers. It seems that either they have departed from the psychedelic in recent times or have chosen to present themselves as more of a straight ahead rock band live. If I give the impression that they didn’t put on a good set, that wasn’t my intention. I just would have liked more of the eccentric psychedelic pop sensibility that only bands of the Elephant Six Collective seem to be able to provide. I also tend to favor their more ballad heavy songs such as “Strange Things” and “U and I.”
Apollo Sunshine is as quirky on stage as you would expect. When the three of these Mass. musicians weren’t rocking out, they were trying to convince us to try to do weird things with our bodies (like twist our wrists and lift them over our heads) Basically, I couldn’t do it but it was fun to watch everyone try. There was some nice banter about bands and yo-yos and you just felt the summer watching them play. But, perhaps the song that I appreciated the most was actually a cover of Mazarin’s “The New American Apathy.”
