Gris Gris

Behind the distortion and reverb, is the band Gris Gris whose songs are absorbed into a cachophony that lead singer Greg Ashley almost seems to try to avoid on stage. It’s almost as if he can’t accept his fate as a lead singer as he hides to the far side of the stage in the back and delivers his sweeping mess, creating what sounds like a new disembodied voice effect. It might just be the new psychedelic (with more pedals and more angst) but it feels more experimental than that. Gris Gris are abrupt and edgy. The one real difficulty is in deciphering lyrics amongst the instrumentation and, in a sense, Ashley’s possibly disturbing lyrics almost become another instrument. The problem with that, though, is that it’s challenging to discern the lyrics while the song is playing and that can be a real barrier to connecting to music.
