Make Believe

7/23/6
Wicker Park Street Festival
Day Two
Chicago
While I’m a fan of Joan of Arc, I’ve never really gotten into Make Believe, which is another band fronted by Tim Kinsella who has clearly been in enough important bands to have a wikipedia entry about him. There’s a real strong Chicago history with this musician and although I respect that history, I’m never quite sure how to take Kinsella’s antics. Make Believe has a harsher sound that feels devoid of melody to me and, because of that, I wasn’t even planning on blogging or even taking pictures mainly because our lifespan is limited.
But, I couldn’t take my eyes off of Tim Kinsella whose impetuous nature seems to make him do crazy things without thinking twice about them. For example, wrapping a microphone chord around the neck of an innocent bystander and pulling him across the ground with his mike. This may not have been the best idea and, of course, the situation escalated.
Why I did take pictures even though I don’t agree with this action and don’t care for the music of Make Believe is because towards the end of the set, when Kinsella asked again if anyone had something to say, a man in the audience decided to get political. This man talked about voter fraud, 911 conspiracy, Fortune 500 companies-the whole bit and Tim Kinsella said to him three times: “I’m sorry. I didn’t quite hear that. Could you say that again a little louder” before having him actually join him on stage (the man is on the left in the pictures) and saying it. When someone booed, Tim said, “Hey you that booed-you can stop liking my band now” and sang an improptu song with the lyrics being what the man had just spoken. Like I said before, you couldn’t really look away…
