I wasn’t able to catch all of The National’s set as I wanted to catch some of Brazil’s CSS in the Biz3 tent beginning shortly after The National went on. (Pitchfork could have made this a three day music festival easily as there were so many bands to hear and things to see!) I found myself enjoing the few songs I did hear from this five piece out of Brooklyn whose lead singer, Matt Berninger, focuses just on his vocals instead of trying to sing and play an instrument at the same time. This may be an effective strategy, for his voice was certainly passionate to the degree at times as in “Abel” that I wondered if he throat would feel painfully raw after his set was finished. However, at other times as in the case of “Secret Meeting,” Berninger toned it down to softer singing and almost talk singing at points, apologizing “I”m sorry I missed you. I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain.”
