I’m a big fan of Mission of Burma, particularily Vs. and Signals, Calls and Marches. I do think their last two albums, On Off On and The Obliterati are strong releases but I guess I have had more time to love the earlier songs. One thing to be said for Mission of Burma is that they do still acknowledge their past material, unlike when I saw Wire a couple of years ago. Playing some songs off of their last two albums, they also played favorites like “Academy Fight Song,” “That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate,” “Einstein’s Day” and “That’s When I Reach for my Revolver.” The only major disappointment was when they started off with the chords for “Trem Two” and decided not to play it. (It seemed as though they may have been having technical difficulties) Overall, though, it was a great set and it’s always such a joy to hear and see them. One other amazing thing about this band besides it’s historical significance is the fact that aside from Bob Weston filling in for Martin Swope as sound engineer, all of the original band members are in tact. Guitarist Roger Miller, bassist Clint Conley and drummer Peter Prescott were all in best form, too. The energy they showed while rocking out to both new and older material was astounding and a great thing to witness.
