Spoon

Pitchfork Music Festival
Day Two
7/30/6
Chicago, Illinois
I was impressed with Austin’s Spoon’s performance at Pitchfork. When I had seen them once previously, they had played a smaller street festival in Chicago (this would be after their release Girls Can Tell) and, although I really liked the songs that had played that night off of primarily this album and their album A Series of Sneaks, the performance wasn’t as strong. They also had grown as much as a live band, particularily Britt Daniel’s vocals have improved, and I could tell immediately they are in a much better place both in terms of their songwriting and their performance. Highlights of the set include: “I Turn My Camera On,” “Jonathan Fisk,” and “I Summon You.” My one regret was that they didn’t perform “Chicago at Night,” which of course would be sort of perfect considering they were, after all, in Chicago at night.
