OS MUTANTES!!!!

Pitchfork Music Festival
Day Two
7/30/6
Chicago, Illinois
I was starting to worry about not ever getting to this point because it signifies the end for me after four days of rabid photo editing and blogging and it was also the best reason to attend Pitchfork this year. I’ve been a fan of Os Mutantes for a couple of years now but my interest heightened after seeing the Tropicalia exhibit at the Museum of Contemporay Art in Chicago. Although we have political oppression in the United States, it is nothing compared to what Os Mutantes lived though in Brazil during the dictatorship of Costa E Silva. Os Mutantes not only survived this period of fascism in Brazil but managed to create amazing music during it. It’s something we can all learn and gain inspiration from. Os Mutantes was one of the few bands that defined the heightened creativity during the Tropicalia movement of 1968-1972 and their contributions to musical history are vital.
So, when I saw Os Mutantes, who hasn’t performed in many years before this tour, in the actual flesh…well, I almost had to pinch myself to believe it was real. The songs were full and lush as on their recordings. I couldn’t help but dance while listening to them with such complete happiness filling me I wouldn’t know where to begin in terms of trying to describe it. But let’s just say that it was a life changing experience to be able to be in their presence. And even though Rita Lee wasn’t present, I felt that Zelia Duncan did a great job bringing such inspiring and revolutionary material to life. Higlights of the set included: “Panis Et Circenses,” “Bat Macumba,” “Baby,” “Ando Meio Desligado,” and “A Minha Menina”
