Awkward Conversations About Music pt 2

(or Commercial Relativity)
My parents in law try to be nice to both of us in general. I know I’m not easy to get along with considering my politics are so different from theirs (they actually voted for Bush) and my tastes in…well…just about everything are different. Music is unfortunately no exception as my father in law really likes typical modern radio friendly pop-country (he especially likes Toby Keith for example).
When they were here this summer visiting, I figured the best shot at putting on something we all would like was Johnny Cash which was fine for awhile and then I decided to put on The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society by (obviously) The Kinks. My mother in law commented about how she liked it and I felt great because I felt I was connecting with her on not only an album of her generation but also great music.
Things were going really well, in fact, until “Picture Book” came on…
“Oh! Oh! That’s the song from that commercial,” she exclaimed with the glee upon recognition. It’s not that I automaticaly hate and discredit songs that are in commercials (it’s fair to say my feelings are mixed on the topic) but I thought we were finally connecting about something real and above all that. Oh well.

yeah I know…but like I said before I always have sort of mixed feelings about songs in commercials…like, for example my cousin knows who some great bands are because they are in commercials so I’m glad that they have a bigger audience and can probably now afford rent, food, etc. but at the same time, I hate how every time I think of certain songs, I see the visual images of products. It’s really sad when that happens I think because…well, some songs are just better than that.

(and here’s a rare sight, a 20ish blonde chick with BUSH / CHENEY tee, from sunday morn. i shoulda told her “yr one brave person to wear such a thing, esp. here”)
