Awkward Conversations About Music pt. something

(Or when music snobbery intersects photo snobbery in one pretentious car crash)

Not too long ago, I went to see Feist and Sonic Youth at the Double Door, which I reviewed here. It was a sold out overfilled to capacity type of show with a mixture of people who had won tickets from a radio station and random people the radio station had given away tickets to and we were all pretty crammed in and suffocating from eachother’s discarded breaths. After Feist’s set, I went to the restroom and waited for a couple of minutes. A girl who had drank about ten too many started talking to me about one of the many Last Vegas posters that were plastered all over the walls. The poster in question can be viewed here although I feel I should mention that the photocopy brought out the worst of the picture, making the oversaturated characteristics of it worse and also removing some of the detail by appearing too contrast-y.

Here’s the conversation we had:

her: OMG The Last Vegas! Aren’t they so hot! I talked to one of them last time they were here-this one (she pointed at one of the over contrast green tinged figures. I didn’t pay enough attention to which one)
me: I just shrugged at this point.
her: more OMG so hot etc. as she fell all over herself.
me: Actually, I can’t really even tell what they look like by that poster.
her: yeah?
me: It’s a really bad photo. The contrast removes all of the detail and they cut off the heads of these two guys (I point at the picture) and they cut off this guy’s ear. It looks wrong to me.
her: I think it’s supposed to be artistic.
me: Well, it’s not artistic. It’s just bad.

It was pretty much just awkwardness that followed after that until with relief, my turn was up and I was able to enter the stall and escape the conversation. It’s possible I’m a photo snob but I can’t imagine why someone would want their band photo to look like that exhibitioned all over the place. I don’t know the music of The Last Vegas but they are pretty much last on my list to look into now.
