Awkward Conversations (Around) Music

touch-and-go.jpg

So…continuing with the Hideout Block Party theme of the week (I swear I am going to do a more substantial day three. I’m up to my Seam pictures and I promise to give you some of Black Heart Procession, CocoRosie, and Calexico…keep checking flickr but I’ve also been going to shows all this week so I just haven’t had as much time to do any editing.

Anyhow, this conversation is a little different because it wasn’t about music…it was around music. Shellac was playing at The Hideout Block Party Saturday night and I couldn’t get anywhere near the stage because of the high volume of people and because I had been up close for Man or Astroman on the opposite stage. Therefore, the sound wasn’t as good and I knew I wouldn’t get good pictures. Combine this with the fact that I was feeling a little claustrophobic…I started drifting around a bit while Cinchel watched. The lighting wasn’t as good farther from the stage but I could still make out the respectably oversized headphones of a young 19ish guy with long curly hair as he approached. At first, I was taken aback thinking this might be a new postmodern way of hitting on someone but the more I talked to him, the more I realized he just wasn’t thinking or acting rationally. Here’s our conversation with Shellac playing in the background:

him: Excuse me, do I know you? Do you teach creative writing?
me: No…I like creative writing but I don’t teach it.
him: Are you sure?
me: Yes, I’m sure.
him: Were you my creative writing professor?
me: No…I don’t teach creative writing.
him: I think you were, weren’t you?
me: Honestly, no. I think you have me mixed up with someone else.
him: I hated your class.

And then he stormed off. See what Shellac inspires everyone? If it had been CocoRosie playing we would have all been dancing again and not having any awkward conversations.
