Awkward Conversations About Music

I have the slowest metabolism in the world but that’s another story. Many of my awkward conversations about music occur around the gym basically because I have to work out five days a week just to keep relatively thin. The people who work the reception desk at Cheetah are incredibly nice, patient, and tolerant. Ever since my ishuffle broke this summer (and can I just say, those things are built to last exactly thirteen months, the pieces of crap!) I’ve been just tolerating the music at the gym and reading books during my workout but I tend to be rather vocal about the music when I dislike it. I’m often heard saying snide comments like, “Oh geez I haven’t heard this song since the eighties. I was just managing to forget it existed.” or “Do we really have to listen to this today?” I know…I’m very opinionated. And the guys at the desk are always so nice to me. Half the time, they actually change the music to the piped in generic indie rock mix I like the best. Those guys are angels.
Anyhow, the other day, I was in the locker room. You would think the situation of changing and sweat and all that would make me a little more modest and…well, quiet. But in the locker room sometimes even worse music plays and that day it was some generic new age crap. I mean, it was literally one step down from Enya. I had to grit my teeth to stop the excruciating pain the sounds made. I looked at the woman getting changed nearby (who probably wanted to just put her clothes on in peace like most people) and commented, “Man, this music is awful! And what’s that? Is that the sound of phony birds? What birds sound like that? This is supposed to be relaxing? It makes me anxious.”
I could tell as I looked at the expression on her face start to change and take a new shape that the woman actually did like the music playing…that it probably actually made her feel calm. And again, I wished I wasn’t so opinionated or at least that I could keep it to myself a little better. I can about other things but when it comes to music….

Kirstie,
Your blog is so damn funny and so entertaining and educational. I have heard more great music trolling your blog than by going to Pitchfork.

Aw thanks Jason! That means so much from you (though there is at least one person from pitchfork that really knows his stuff) and I hope you had a wonderful birthday!
