Awkward Conversations About Music

I’ll tell you what was awkward. Remember when Death Cab for Cutie wasn’t such an indie kid’s household name? I mean, there was a time before Plans and The Photo Album when very few people had even heard of Death Cab for Cutie. I was in university at the time and had heard a song of theirs on the community air waves and I ran to the record store impassioned and determined to find their newly release album. I had even done my research and looked up the exact title and label. I walked into the record store near the University at Buffalo’s South Campus and asked…
me: “Do you have the Death Cab for Cutie record”
(older) record store clerk: “Death Cab?
me (feeling almost adolescent): “Yeah Death Cab for Cutie. They have an album out called We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes.”
record store clerk: “Like a taxi?”
me: yes
record store clerk: for attractive dead people?
me: I don’t know if that’s exactly what they were going for.
record store clerk: Well, I’ve never heard of them.
I wish I could go back and see if they have some of their records in stock now.

I think they were going for Bonzo Dog Band tip-of-the-hat. “Death Cab for Cutie” is a great song, too, so one can understand why.
