Awkward Conversations About Music
This is just a short one but around Thanksgiving, I walked into the gym just in time to hear the last chorus of ABBA’s classic single Dancing Queen . As I’ve said many times before, the gym I go to tends to have the worst music imaginable so I was disappointed I had missed perhaps the one good song that was going to play that day.
“Oh!” I pighed (that’s when you sigh and pout at the same time. It sounds much better than the work “spouted”)
“What’s wrong?” the very nice guy at the gym asked.
“It’s just that I missed ABBA.”
“Never heard of them.”
“You’ve never heard of ABBA?”
“Nope.”
(starts singing) “Waterloo I was defeated, you won the war! Waterloo – promise to love you for ever more!”
“Nope.”
(sings) “Can you hear the drums Fernando?”
“Nope”
“Haven’t you seen Muriel’s Wedding?”
“Nope.”
“How can that be? It’s really good. It has Toni Collette in it. She’s really good!”
“No. I haven’t ever heard of it.”
We were both feeling patient but exasperated. I gave up and went into the locker room to change.
