Best Of Myspace Music

1. Mondo
I haven’t done one of these in awhile and for that I am sorry. The winter drags all of the energy out of my bones it seems. I’ve been getting steady myspace requests from bands and I’m behind in listening to be honest but Mondo had made me start this back up again in earnest. Sounding like a mix between José González and a Kings of Convenience, it one part melancholy and two parts lovely. Put them in a bowl and stir and you have a rich cake that tastes and sounds perfect. Hailing from Oslo (also home to Serena Maneesh who doesn’t sound much like them) and Sweden, this two piece is nothing short of enchanting to me.
2. Menomena
Wow…I could listen to this music all day. Under an Hour apparently written for a dance has been playing on my stereo now for the last three hours. It’s repetitive instrumentals are something you start craving and when a song ends, you might find yourself quickly running to the stereo to play it again…and again…and again. This trio from Portland Oregon creates music soothing and at once intense…in a way, it makes me feel the same as when I listen to parts of the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. On Barsuk records. Get ready Chicago because they are coming to The Empty Bottle on Tuesday March 20th.
3. All the Creatures of the Sea
There unfortunately isn’t too much information out about this Chicago two piece but I really like the two songs on their myspace page. The instrumentals are very bright and creative. Another cool thing is that they apparently rehearse in Chinatown…I wonder if they go to the same candy store I like… Go have a listen and add this band as a friend because they definitely deserve more than they have right now.

4. Function
I’m going to be seeing this band tonight at The Empty Bottle. They feel very light to me like both Eluvium and Stars of the Lid. Some might also find a similar tone to the softness as when they listen to Mum. The band seems to have a large ensemble of players only to be surpassed by their daunting list of impressive influences. In their “about” section are the following words:
People were born. Noises were made. People were impressed, deluded and then died.
All My Friends are really cute…this four piece from the UK has sleepy little melodies. Earlier this week, they sent me a friend request and a message apologizing for intruding. But I really liked what I heard even though under sounds like they have typed “unpopular music.” It probably won’t be played on the radio but it has a certain magical lo fi innocence that I can appreciate.
