Mittens On Strings
Mittens on Strings was the only local band for the evening and began the night. Excited about playing with Grizzly Bear, their enthusiasm also helped me anticipate the evening and the cello playing really added to their material. Also intriguing are their ties to Joe O’Connell of Elephant Micah fame who they sometimes play shows with. I would like to see what he would have added to their songs in their live set and it has definitely perked my interest to know of his involvement. Their songs have a folk indie rock quality and it comes as no surprise the influences they list on their myspace page include both Neil Young and Dinosaur Jr by the sound of some of their material. Although, their approach to their songs remind me more of the latter in terms of the laid back demeanor though without the antagonism of J. Mascis to contend with.
