Conversations About Music With Your Love
(about the Beep Beep album)
me: I think this is really good. Don’t you like it?
him: no.
me: You don’t? Why not? It combines the best of Cursive and Hot Hot Heat…don’t you see it?
(pause)
You really don’t like it?
him: no
me: I think it will grow on you
him: yeah…like a rotting fungus
me: I give it two or three months before you are asking for it
*****
me: See, the thing about jazz music is that I love jazz and all and I definitely need to hear it sometimes but I can see myself getting by with say 25 of my favorite jazz albums. That’s really all I’d need. But YOU…no YOU need like hundreds of jazz albums.
him: yeah. Pretty much.
me: That’s like me with French albums. Now you, you could probably get by with like 25 French albums.
him: nah, I wouldn’t even need ten.
me: Ten? Ten French albums? That would be enough for you??
?
him: yeah..you get your Serge and your Françoise Gall.
me: it’s FRANCE Gall. Not Françoise. That’s Françoise Hardy, you’re thinking of.
him: Well, what about punk albums? You’d only need like ten punk albums.
me: No, I’d need more than that.
him: You need everything by the Dead Kennedys and the Dead Milkmen…
me: and X. You need a couple of X albums too.
(I don’t think this conversation has ended yet officially)
***
him: Well, what would you say to Andrew Bird if you had run into him at Intonation Festival?
me: Same thing I said the other two times I ran into him. I’d give him my stunned look and say, “You’re amazing.”
him: He may be polite but he sure isn’t talkative. Hey, Jack (Rabid) should do an interview with him.
me: You just said he isn’t talkative.
****
me: We’ve already spent over two hundred dollars on music already today. I just wanted to come in here and see if Laurie’s has that Eels record I want (Daisies of the Galaxy) , that Czars record I want (Goodbye), and to see if they have any French albums I don’t have and this always happens. You end up picking up a dozen more albums I wasn’t even looking for that you wanted and then I can’t find any of the albums I wanted.
him: Hey, we just bought that complete Fall BBC boxset
me: yeah but you wanted that too. Now, what’s this album…Jim O’Rourke and The Hafler Trio (I like O’Rourke for the record) how do you even know that it’s good?
him: Because I like Jim O’ Rourke and I like The Hafler Trio so I know it’s going to be good.
me: Okay…okay….
....
him: We can always go down to Jazz Record Mart and see if they have any French stuff…
me: Yeah yeah yeah I know what’s gonna happen. We’re gonna go down there and they are going to have NONE of the French albums I want and you’re going to buy another fifteen jazz albums.
him: yeah…(gives me a little pouty face)
In other words, it was a typical Saturday.
