Andrew Morgan

(Tomorrow Never Knows Music Festival)
Schubas 1/12/6
Andrew Morgan has been a long time favorite of mine in Chicago. Misadventures in Radiology was recorded in Elliot Smith’s LA New Monkey Studio in 2003 and there is a bit of an Elliot Smith sound to Morgan’s vocals. There’s a nice sweet lull to them and then piano and strings inevitably fill the air both live and on album. The songs would be perfect filling in the slow, sad, and bittersweet moments of a Wes Anderson film. (I told Andrew Morgan this last night at the second day of the music festival and I think he appreciated what a compliment that was.)
Andrew is really a songwriter at heart and beyond the sugar of some of the wispy vocals, there is a sadness waiting. If you give him your time, you’ll really feel his devastation and you can’t help but be drawn to it. Live performances vary somewhat in terms of instruments. The last time I saw him at the Hideout, it was mainly him at the piano. This time, he brought two cellos to accompany the violin, guitar, drums, and keyboard. On stage, you have a sense that this is what is real and this is what really matters.
