Awkward Conversations About Music
It was a couple of weeks back and i was going to this retirement party for a co-worker. As all work related things go, it’s awkward when you feel like you really don’t have too much in common with the people you are talking to besides the fact that you all have similar jobs but the outside stuff like music is, of course, difficult. There are times I really just want to talk to people about music and so I usually can make small talk up to a point (roughly lasting about half hour) but if we’re not talking about books or art or music or politics, I am not always sure where to go with the conversation.
I was relieved when a fellow co-worker of mine mentioned she used to work for Schubas Tavern which I was talking about in relation to how much I enjoyed the place and photographing bands there. I figured this was my big chance to connect with someone for the next three hours.
“Great place…I love it. The people are so nice and the music is great.”
“Yeah, it was a great place to work.”
“When did you work there?”
“Oh 6 or 7 years ago.”
“That was before I moved to the city, unfortunately.”
“See any good bands there?”
“Yeah not too long ago actually I saw this great band The Noisettes. You know, Schubas gets some great bands just before they become really big before anyone else does.”
“I know! I saw some pretty amazing bands there!”
“Really?”
“Yeah, guess who I saw?!”
(my mind at this point was thinking hmm…maybe Cat Power or Neutral Milk Hotel or something)
“Who?”
“Dave Matthews Band!!’

Kirstie, this is ChrisD from the BT list. I just wanted to say that, in regards to your first paragraph, I’m on the exact same page. Strangely if I am in the company of people that I share things in common with I probably talk too much. In company where I know that most things that I want to talk about will not be of interest to people (that is, if they even know what I’m talking about) I don’t have a clue what to say. Then I get serious anxiety and I just want to go home and throw an album on and read a book or see what Netflix has sent me today or . . . well, you get the point. I think I’ll go listen to Under The Table And Dreaming now
