I finally met Nick Cave…

Yes, I did. It was after midnight which is perfect time for meeting him. After seeing him perform at the Metro with Grinderman (reviewed below), I stood outside the Metro talking with some friends. There were some other girls waiting for him in heavy anticipation, threatening to beat their chests in anguish if he did not appear. I did not know if it would happen or not.

There was not thunder yet that night and there was a clarity in the air as he strolled out like the Australian gentleman he is. I envisioned him as a few years older with greying hair and a dignified cane in that moment, which was strange. I’m not sure if many people that love his music have also read And the Ass Saw the Angel, which I wrote about here. Never while I was reading did I think I might be able to tell him how I felt about the book.

I didn’t have a long engaging conversation with Nick Cave. I didn’t exchange childhood memories or talk about how if Nabokov’s works and The Bible were actually put against eachother, there would be plates thrown. I just said something simple. “I really liked your book. I found it insightful.” He was clearly caught a bit off guard.

And then, as easy as that was, I simply walked away. Sometimes, it’s ok to end things without a photograph. You’ll still remember it forever.
