Say Hi To Your Mom

Say Hi To Your Mom is the ultimate in indie geek rock. Eric Elbogen actually wrote a song entitled “But She Beat My High Score” whose entire premise is that he had to break up with a girl because she beat his high score on a video game. I have not heard their newest album but I was a big fan of the songs off Numbers & Mumblers which is their 2003 release. Ever since my very talented friend Jon sent me an mp3 of “Pop Music of the Future,” I wanted to hear more of this band. What I found live, though, unfortunately, was that Eric came off as more straight ahead and rocking than the record. Usually I wouldn’t mind but what I loved about Say Hi To Your Mom the most was their geeky idiosynracies that I felt was too stripped away live. They also played many more new songs instead of my favorites off of Numbers & Mumblers. It’s very possible that there are many who might appreciate their live show more than their records, though. Eric’s guitar playing was nicely complemented by Chris’s drumming and the keyboard playing of Jeff Sheinkopf (also a member of Longwave and of the now unfortunately defunct Sea Ray ) Personally, I guess I just wanted more to leave with a better sense of Eric as a person who wrote some of the songs I have such a fondness for and I didn’t come away with that.

I think you summed it nicely! I too wish Eric would have taken a “geekier” route. I would of loved to hear “pop music of the future” or “the sparrow and the pimp” or anything more off of Numbers & Mumblers or Discosadness. Oh, at the show Cinchel and I were talking and I was mistaken – I thought you had introduced me to SHTYM but indeed you are correct and it was the other way around! (btw thanks for the talanted compliment :-)

Jon you know I remember looking at some of your photography on line-I believe the web adress was on that now defunct web site for one of your art shows but I couldn’t find that site anymore. I was going to link it up unless you don’t want me to but I did enjoy looking at your photography.
