Mi and L’au

2/4/6
Empty Bottle in Chicago
Mi and L’au’s debut album is full of sparse and haunting melodies, minimalistic acoustic guitar combined with female/vocal harmonies. It came as no surprise to me that these songs came from their time together in a remote cabin in Finland. Mi is actually from Finland but L’au is French. Together, they create fragile and delicate music; the kind that is perfect to be playing as snow is falling all around you. Emotionally, it is somewhat reminiscent of Cyann and Ben’s music, although it is much more stripped down.
Live, Mi and L’au were very quiet playing a gentle acoustic set. They interacted very little with the audience but were willing to enchant those that would gather close and listen. Highlights of the show: “Philosopher,” “I’ve Been Watching You,” “Merry Go Round,” “Boxer,” and “Christmas Soul.” They also played some new songs not currently on available recordings that held up well with the songs on their debut album.
