Film School

Schubas in Chicago
3/2/6
Film School is a five piece from San Francisco who describe themselves on their myspace page as “indie psychedelic rock” but I woudl say take out psychedelic and replace it with “shoegaze.” The songs off of their 2006 self titled album also recall some of the darkness of mid 80s Cure (people say the lead singer of the Shout Out Louds, Adam Olenius, has a voice reminiscent of Robert Smith but I’d say the comparison is more apt for the lead singer of Film School, Krayg Burton.) Many of the songs sound like Robert Smith backing up songs played by Interpol if they were trying to cover music written by your ten favorite shoegaze bands. Very swirly at times but also dark and brooding at other times. Live, they came off as very captivating on a music level with a really great feel to the keyboard and sampler filling in any empty bits that the guitars, vocals, and bass didn’t catch. At some points, it was nice just to close your eyes and feel it all around you.
You can listen to their songs by following the myspace link.
