Bee Gees Dream

I had a dream about the Bee Gees last night. Well…sort of. See, in my dream, I had someone how gotten backstage to watch the Bee Gees play in front of about thirty thousand people. Of course, they weren’t really the Bee Gees. They looked sort of like the Smashing Pumpkins in the early 90s if all of them looked completely average and were about to take their laundry in. They even sounded more like the Smashing Pumpkins. But everyone still called them the Bee Gees. It would be sort of like if you ordered a chocolate milkshake and had gotten unsweetened iced tea but everyone kept telling you, “Hey, what’s your problem? There it is! Your chocolate milkshake!”

Now, I’m not a huge Bee Gees fan. I know I’m supposed to think Barry Gibb’s voice is sexy but it has the same effect on me as an out of tune vacuum cleaner on the fritz. The only album of theirs I really like and own is 1st and I would have liked to have heard some songs off of that. I have a list of other albums I should get that someone with good taste told me about a while back. Maybe this is the way my subconscious has chosen to remind me about this. In any case, even though I’m not a big Bee Gees fan, I figure if you’re going to play to thousands of people, you might want to be honest with them. I don’t know…maybe I had gone to the wrong stage at a music festival. Maybe when I wasn’t paying attention at some point, they actually told the audience they were the “Bees Knees, an ultimate Bee Gees cover band.” Or maybe it was just a silly dream.

The only song the Bee Gees or the Bees Knees ended up playing that I did recognize was “Staying Alive” and I liked it better when I saw Robyn Hitchcock perform it (in real life). Although, this way was very avant garde, I must say. In the middle of singing the chorus, (again, picture Smashing Pumpkins circa early 90s right before Gish was released trying to cover “Staying Alive”) Billy Corgan and the others kept holding up posterboard signs of people who they knew who had died. The posters were like flimsy tombstones held over their heads. It’s very difficult to disco dance to that.

But what preturbed me most about my dream is that…well, I had presumably gotten backstage at some large music festival…that implies I may have taken a trip somewhere. I thought as soon as the Bee Gees or the Bees Knees were done playing, I might be able to head over to see where Amelie was filmed or something. Alas, I woke up. What a let down.

People, I give my dream a 7 out of 10, which means it’s barely a rental, not to be spent theater prices on, and I hope I won’t have to rewatch it anytime soon.

(now playing: Can: Unlimited Edition….now where did that Bee Gees album I own go to anyway?)
