Indecison by Benjamin Kunkel
It’s nice to read a book where you really like the characters…especially when it’s the main character. Dwight is definitely a protagonist I could related to….he’s caught between trying to figure out how the world is affected by different political systems and how in particular the third world is affected by countries like America and, in the meantime, he’s so indecisive he can’t make a simple decision without flipping a coin. (I should probably say now that I’ve made multitudes of life decisions this way myself and I can’t imagine what I would do without a quarter when I’m between two things especially) To cure his Abulia (or chronic indecision), he decides he will take a new drug that has been made to help people just in his situation.
With Abulinix, Dwight is now able to make tons of decisions, even taking a trip across the world to meet up with a girl after leaving his present girlfriend in NYC by the wayside. The only problem is…he gets a little caught up in all of the decisions the world has made time and time again. He sees poverty, the jungle, and one giant spider (like me, Dwight is also afraid of spiders…he’s really the type of guy if I was single I’d ask out in a date.)
The witty and insightful first person perspective of this book makes it an easy read, for in the context of Dwight’s mind the reader can really learn quite a bit. Yet, because it delves into the issue of third world exploitation, this book is often a thoughtful one that touches on real relavant issues. Not only does it give insight into the world but also the way relationships and humans are. I highly recommend reading it.
