Casiotone for the Painfully Alone

4/1/6 at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago
Cftpa kind of reminds me of a more sane Daniel Johnston. The lyrics are a bit more coherent and often delineate a moment or a single experience as in the case of “When the Bridge Toll Was a Dollar” or heartfelt attempts at relationship returns as in the case of “Cold Shoulder” and although the songs have a bit of an indie fuzz feel to them, they are quite loveable. Based in Chicago according to their myspace page, Owen Ashworth is the brainchild and one man wonder of this band. Live, he used mainly samples and a keyboard but had one of the openers, a band by the name of The Donkeys
make the sparse parts sound thicker. I have to say that I enjoyed the set more with them playing backup.
