The Brunettes

4/4/6
Ah New Zealand’s Brunettes ...with a little bit of twee and a little bit of sunshine they make their listeners happy and light like we’ve lost all of our body mass and we’re floating above Earth. I rarely go to two weeknight shows in a row on a Mon and a Tues night when I have to work but the Brunettes were worth the workday anguish of the next day.
In sme ways, The Brunettes are a throwback to 60s sunshine pop but they definitely have a modern day indie influence as well. (sometimes, when Heather talk-sings in certain songs as in the case of “Talk to Jesus”, I’m even reminded of Black Box Recorder) They were playing with a full ensemble tuesday night with the vocal interplay between Heather and Jonathan being complimented nicely by saxaphone, trumpet, clarinet, and glockenspeil.
The Brunettes also had a really fun stage presence, even at one point donning Mary Kate/Ashley Olsen masks for a really cheesy effect. I wonder if they do the same thing in New Zealand….

I agree they are very light and do bring a ray of sunshine into the dark venue. When I saw them the night before at the Metro with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah they sported the Mary Kate and Ashley masks for one song. I thought the guy who kind of looks like Martin Short ( the last picture – the guy in the white tShirt ) was hilarious and very animated!
