Willy Mason (with Nina Violet)

4/11/6 at Webster Hall in NYC
Willy Mason opened up for Beth Orton at Webster Hall with some nice folk rock with old timey country influences. He was complimented especially well by the nice violin accomiament and occasional singing of Nina Violet who seems to have her own set of accomplished songs together. It was a real treat to see them, especially because up close I was able to get a real feel for Willy and the kind of guy he was. He’s the kind of guy you’d want to share popsicles with on a hot summer’s day on some backyard porch. There’s be an old dog nearby too in order to keep you company. I bought his most recent album, Where the Humans Eat with pleasure.
Also, Willy was rather engaging for playing such a large sized venue. One story he shared in particular was how when he was in high school he wrote Oxygen after a music theory class…I was pretty impressed that he could write such a song in high school. It was also very special to see him and Nina play with Beth Orton for a song later on in the night. You can hear his songs on his myspace page
